David Oliver Classic

As the indoor season comes to a close, there is two weeks until the High School Indoor Track Championships at the JDL FastTrack in Winston Salem on February 10th and 11th.  It is during this meet athletes will compete at the State Level and continue to demonstrate how hard they have trained and work to make it this far.

The indoor track team traveled to Winston Salem for the David Oliver Classic.  At this track meet our athletes were fortunate to meet and take photos with David Oliver (Bronze Medal winner in the 2008 Olympic Games) and compete with many of the best High School Athletes in the 1-4A Divisions in.  Student Athletes traveled from Virginia as well as Florida to showcase what High school track is all about. This meet brought out the best in athletes, with new personal records being set and old records being demolished.

Payton Russell finished 3rd out of 106 in the 300 meter dash with a time of 40.79 (personal record) behind Kiya Ovlosum of South Guilford HS (39.51) and Taylor Currie (40.66).  Currently Russell is the fastest 300 meter female athlete in 1/2A division, prior to the meet she was in 4th,  Heavenly Robinson’s 1st 300 meter competition earned her 21st place with a time of 43.02, securing her a qualifying time to compete at the state meet.  We also witnessed our own Chevy Blair throw a personal record of 36’2.5” in the shot put which elevated her standing in the 1/2A division from 8th to 3rd going into the championship series.  Blair finished second behind Wakefield HS Fraley Veronica who threw 40’8”.   Our soon to be conference star Kendall Murphy also set a personal best in the shot put.  Alijah Broom and A’jon Jones (2 seconds from qualifying for the state meet ) put on an impressive showing of endurance when faced with competitive competition to run, 1:13.51 and 1:15.52 in the Men 500 meter dash.   Absent from the team for the meet was Gregory Crawford and Tykier Walker, Maliya Parker and Lakayla Birst.

The Cavalier Indoor team knows with expectation comes responsibility so we have no doubt they will represent us well at the State Championships in February.
